Serving Survivors of Homicide Victims

For the advocate, working with survivors of homicide victims means supporting them through the most shattering experience of their lives and assisting them during the painful but necessary reentry into meaningful life. This 2-day training is useful not only for victim advocates, but also for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and other criminal justice professionals. Participants in this training will learn how to make a compassionate death notification and how to assist survivors immediately following notification of a homicide; describe the risk factors that may lead to trauma-related disorders; explain how to prepare a survivor for a homicide trial and describe the purpose of a victim impact statement; and describe how to assist with survivors during investigation of a cold case.
