Through this project, BJA provides for the comprehensive assessment of the structure, management, and operating practices of law enforcement agency homicide investigations based on best practices across the nation. A team of experienced homicide subject-matter experts and criminal justice practitioners provide on-site assessment services that include a comprehensive assessment of data and policies, as well as interviews with agency homicide investigation personnel, agency personnel in other units within the department, and representatives of agencies whose work intersects with homicide investigations (e.g., narcotics and gang units, forensics, and prosecutions). Each assessment results in a comprehensive report to the recipient agency that outlines recommendations designed to help agencies improve the quality of homicide investigations and increase the clearances of homicide cases.
